Los Cristianos is an unusual town, not only is it a perfect holiday resort, with golden beaches, restaurants and bars, but also a real working town, with a full range of shops, banks, other commercial interests and a port for ferries and leisure trips.

It was once a small fishing village in the south of Tenerife. The roads into the town were so poor that it was easier to travel by sea. The main source of income was growing bananas.

In the 1950s los Cristianos was discovered by the Swedish people for its beneficial medical effects. The sands were believed to have healing properties and the air was dry and unpolluted. Patients were sent from Sweden to Los Cristianos to recover from accident injuries and to alleviate symptoms of M.S. and asthma. A hospital was built in town and many local people were employed to help care for the patients.

The town began to grow and the connection with Sweden continues to this day, with both the Swedish church and the Wintersol re-habilitation hospital.

The new Reina Sofia airport was built in the south of Tenerife in the late 1970s and with the then improved road network and motorway connection, the south of the island began to thrive and became the main holiday area. Los Cristianos in particular retained its mix of holiday and business interests. In recent years attention has been given to the appearance of the town, in creating more gardens and playgrounds, and making the surroundings attractive. However the one best things about Los Cristianos has to be it's climate. It is in the warm south of the island, sheltered by high mountains. The weather is never extreme. Tenerife has been called the island of eternal spring. In the south of the island that is an understatement. It's more like eternal summer. The highest season is Mid Winter.

A perfect holiday destination.
